Meet the Doctors

Sebastiano

Sebastiano Andreana, DDS, MS, is an Associate Professor in the Restorative Dentistry Department, as well as Director of Implant Dentistry. He graduated from the University of Rome in La Sapienza, Italy. Dr. Andreana is a national and international lecturer, as well as the member of a number of national and international organizations. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, and is currently Director of the Implant Study Club.

His practice focuses on planning, placement and site preparation for dental implants, including sinus lifts and ridge augmentations.

Bairam

Latifa R. Bairam, DDS, MS, is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Restorative Dentistry Department. She graduated from the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine with an Advanced Education and Certificate in Prosthodontics, and a Master’s of Science in Oral Sciences. She also earned a Certificate in Maxillofacial Prosthodontics from Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

Dr. Bairam provides the following range of services:

  • Preventive and general dental treatment
  • Veneers, crowns and bridges
  • Partial and complete removable dental prostheses (dentures)
  • Dental implants (planning and restoration)

Barnashuk

Frank Barnashuk, DDS, is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry where he is program director for the Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) residency program. Before becoming a full-time educator 7 years ago, Barnashuk was engaged in the full-time private practice of general dentistry in Lackawanna, NY.

The current faculty practice office delivers diagnostic, restorative and preventive dental care including:

  • Restorative Care (fillings, crowns, bridges, partial and complete dentures, implant restoration)

Brewer

Jane Brewer, DDS, MS, is the Chair of the Restorative Dentistry department at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, as well as a clinical associate professor.

Cantos

Albert Cantos, DDS, Fellow in the American Academy of Oral Medicine

Dr. Cantos graduated from SUNYAB School of Dental Medicine in 1981 and has been in private practice ever since.  In 1983, he began to treat patients in skilled nursing facilities (nursing homes) as a separate part of his practice, and also became involved in geriatric dental research. Eventually, he opened his own office at 2264 Main Street in Buffalo. He became dental director at eight different skilled nursing facilities and joined the staff at Sisters of Charity Hospital and Kenmore Mercy Hospital. His activity in academics also increased from involvement in research to becoming a clinical instructor in a postgraduate Geriatric Dentistry Fellowship. Currently, Dr. Cantos is a clinical assistant professor at SUNYAB School of Dental Medicine, has recently qualified for fellowship status in the American Academy of Oral Medicine, and maintains his practice on Main Street. His areas of interest include cosmetic dentistry, implant restoration, root canal therapy, periodontics (treatment of gum disease), crowns and bridges, and full and partial dentures.

With his background in geriatric dentistry, Dr. Cantos is comfortable handling patients who have difficulties receiving treatment due to conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. He is also well equipped to treat patients who use numerous medications, have complex medical problems, have autism, and/or have developmental disabilities. His office is handicap accessible and has early morning and evening hours.

Cohen

Robert E. Cohen, DDS, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Periodontics and Endodontics at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine.

Dr. Cohen has a degree in chemical engineering from Cornell University. At the University at Buffalo, he obtained his DDS, a Master’s in biomaterials, and a PhD in oral biology, as well as a Certificate of Proficiency (specialty training) in Periodontics.  He is a Diplomate (Board-Certified) of the American Board of Periodontology and has research interests in the field of periodontal immunology.

Garlapo

Davis A. Garlapo, DDS, is a Professor in the Restorative Dentistry department of the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. He graduated from the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine with advanced training and a Certificate in Prosthodontics. Garlapo has both an academic dental career and a private dental practice that focuses on adult restorative treatments to establish and maintain optimal oral health. His office provides the following range of services:

Haraszthy

Violet I. Haraszthy, DDS, MS, PhD, Professor in Restorative Department. Graduated from School of Dental Medicine at Buffalo, NY. Haraszthy has a Certificate in Periodontics and a Certificate in Prosthodontics. Haraszthy is active with educational and professional organizations, she is a national and international lecturer. She received an Honorary Doctorate in 2013 from the University of Szeged Hungary. She is an experienced scientist who is well published and funded. Because Haraszthy is also an educator, patients benefit from dental care provided by an expert on the forefront of education and research. The office commitment is to provide an optimal level of care combined with satisfaction and comfort.

Jewair

Thikriat Al-Jewair BDS, MSc, MS, FRCDC, is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Director of the Advanced Education Program in Orthodontics at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. She received her Masters of Science degree and certificate of proficiency in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She also holds a Master’s degree in dental public health from the University of Toronto. Al-Jewair is a Diplomate of the American board of Orthodontics and a fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.

Al-Jewair has received honorable recognition from the Eighth District Dental Society, as well as the Northern Eastern Society of Orthodontists, for the quality patient care she has provided. She is an active member of the American Association of Orthodontists and the American Dental Association, in addition to other organizations. She regularly attends continuing education to keep up with the latest technology and treatment techniques.

Kim-Pusateri, DDS, MS, received her dental degree and Certificate in Prosthodontics at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. She currently serves as Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry at the University at Buffalo and maintains a private practice limited to prosthodontics.

Kim-Hyeong-Il

Hyeongil Kim, DDS, MS, FACP, is an Associate Professor and Director of Advanced Education Program in Prothodontics in the Restorative Dentistry Department of University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine.

Kim graduated from University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine with advanced training and a Certificate in Prosthodontics and completed fellowship in surgical and restorative implant dentistry. As a board-certified prosthodontist, Kim has both an academic career and a private dental practice limited to prosthodontics. His office provides the following range of services:

Kim-Jeonghyeon

Jeonghyeon Kim, DDS, MS, PhD, is a clinical instructor in the Restorative Dentistry department of the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine.

Kim graduated from the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. Prior to moving to the United States, Kim received her DDS, Master’s, and PhD in prosthodontics from Yonsei University College of Dentistry. Kim continues her academic dental career as well as a private dental practice that seeks to provide optimal care for her patients. Her practice provides the following range of services:

Keith

Dr. Keith L. Kirkwood is Professor of Oral Biology and Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. Prior to returning to the University at Buffalo in 2017, he was Founding Chair of the Department Oral Health Sciences at the College of Dental Medicine at Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), Charleston, SC where he was Associate Dean for Research and Director for the MUSC Center for Oral Health Research. Dr. Kirkwood completed his Certificate in Periodontology and earned his Ph.D. in Oral Biology at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo.

He was also a tenured Associate Professor at the University of Michigan in the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine. He is principal investigator in several grants from the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Dental Research (NIH/NIDCR) focused on understanding innate immune signaling involved inflammatory periodontal bone loss and oral cancer progression. He has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including an National Research Service Award from the NIH/NIDCR, the Tarrson Fellowship Career Development Award from the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation, two-time recipient of the IADR/GSK Innovation in Oral Care Award, the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award from the Pharmacology/Therapeutics/Toxicology Research Group, and the Sunstar Fellowship Research Award from the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation.

Maddi

Abhiram Maddi, MS, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in Periodontics. Maddi has a Certificate in Periodontics and is currently the Post Graduate Clinical Director of periodontics at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. Maddi’s practice is limited to periodontics and implant surgery.

Monaco

Edward A. Monaco, DDS, is a clinical assistant professor in the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, where he earned his DDS. His specialty is prosthodontics.

Nancy Mufalli, DDS, is a graduate of the University of Buffalo, School of Dental Medicine. She completed a General Dentistry Residency at Buffalo General Hospital and is a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry. She provides care for children, adults, and geriatric patients. Services include implant restoration, total mouth rehabilitation, dentures, partial dentures, tooth colored fillings, crowns, bridges, veneers, tooth whitening, extractions, and preventive services (cleanings, exams, and x-rays). Christopher Pusateri, DDS, MS, received his dental degree and certificate in Prosthodontics at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. He also completed a fellowship in surgical and restorative implant dentistry. Dr. Pusateri currently serves as Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry at the University at Buffalo and maintains a private practice limited to prosthodontics. Dana M. Qeblawi, DDS, MS, is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Restorative Dentistry Department. She earned her DDS at the University at Jordan, and received Advanced Training in Prosthodontics and Implant Dentistry from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics, and has lectured nationally and internationally.

Dr. Qeblawi offers the following services:

Sadid-Zadeh

Ramtin Sadid-Zadeh, DDS, MS, received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree and directly started his private practice. He served as a general dentist for about 7 years. In 2006, Dr. Sadid-Zadeh started a new chapter of his life. He went back to school and received his Master’s of Science in Dental Material from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. After receiving his Master’s degree, he attended a three-year dental residency program specializing in prosthodontics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Birmingham VA Hospital. To reach out to patients with facial and intraoral deficiency resulting from head and neck cancer or congenital anomaly, he continued with one-year fellowship in maxillofacial prosthetics at University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital. Scannapieco

Frank A. Scannapieco, DDS, PhD, is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Oral Biology at the University at Buffalo’s School of Dental Medicine. He received his BS in Biology from the University of Connecticut, his MS in Biology from Northeastern University, and his DMD from the University of Connecticut. He also holds a Certificate in Periodontology and a PhD in Oral Biology, both from the University at Buffalo. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Periodontology, has edited three issues of Dental Clinics of North America, serves on the editorial boards of several scientific journals, and has served as a referee for over 80 peer-reviewed scientific journals. He is Past-Treasurer of the American Association for Dental Research, and is an active member of the American Society for Microbiology, American Dental Association, and the American Academy of Periodontology. He is an active educator and mentor for graduate, dental and college students. His research focuses on oral microbiology, molecular mechanisms of oral bacterial colonization, salivary biomarkers for oral disease assessment, and the interface between oral and systemic health. Dr. Scannapieco’s periodontics practice focuses on prevention and disease control.

His practice hours are Tuesday from 8:00 am – 6:00 pm.

Shibly

Othman Shibly, DDS, MS, is an Associate Professor in the Periodontics Department at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine.

He graduated from the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine with advanced training and a Certificate in Periodontics. Shibly is Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. Both his academic dental career and his private dental practice focus on adult periodontics and implant dentistry treatments to establish and maintain optimal oral health. Shibly is active with educational and professional organizations to provide the best in dental treatment.

Benita-Sobieraj

Benita D. Sobieraj, DDS, is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Restorative Dentistry Department. S he graduated from Jagiellonian University in Poland in 1991 and from the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine in 1997. She continued her education with a Certificate in Advanced Education in General Dentistry in 1998. Dr. Sobieraj’s private practice is limited to adult preventive, fixed restorative, and implant dentistry.

Warunek

Stephen P. Warunek, DDS, MS, is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthodontics at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine.

Warunek graduated from the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine and completed a general practice residency at the VA Medical Center. He also received specialty training and a Certificate in Orthodontics. Warunek is a consultant to Great Lakes Orthodontics Ltd and the VA Medical Center. His practice is limited to orthodontics and oral appliance therapy for sleep apnea.

Keith

Lisa Marie Yerke DDS, MS, is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Periodontics and Endodontics. She earned her DDS from the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine and her certificate in Periodontics from the Eastman Institute for Oral Health in Rochester. She is board-certified by the American Board of Periodontology.

Zambon

Joseph J. Zambon, DDS, PhD, graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree from St. John Fisher College. He received his DDS from the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. He completed a general practice residency at the U. S. Navy Medical Center in Portsmouth, VA, and then served as a dental officer in the U.S. Navy. Following his active duty in the military, he completed a PhD in oral biology and specialty training in periodontology, also at the University at Buffalo.

He is a member of the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine faculty, where he has been named a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor of Periodontics. Dr. Zambon is a past Associate Editor of the Journal of Periodontology and a former Director of the Advanced Education Program in Periodontology. He has received numerous awards for his work, including the R. Earl Robinson Periodontal Regeneration Award and the Clinical Research Award, both from the American Academy of Periodontology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists. Dr. Zambon has published over four hundred abstracts, papers and book chapters in the area of periodontics and oral microbiology, including several of the most cited papers in dentistry.
